Listening, believing and supporting survivors since 2008.

SARSAS (Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support) provides specialist support to people affected by sexual violence, recognising the deep and long-lasting impact trauma can have on mental health, relationships, and daily life. It focuses on helping survivors feel safe, heard, and supported as they move towards recovery.

Multi-year funding has contributed to the delivery of trauma-informed counselling for survivors with complex needs, including those experiencing PTSD, mental health challenges, homelessness, or other forms of vulnerability. This has enabled trained counsellors to provide consistent, one-to-one support, alongside a wider package of care including assessments, helpline access, wellbeing resources, and group-based support.

This approach has made a meaningful difference to participants - 93% have reported improved wellbeing, while all participants experienced a reduction in trauma-related symptoms and found the counselling improved their ability to cope with daily life. Many felt better able to rebuild relationships, re-engage with their communities, and develop safer, more positive futures.

Recent feedback highlights the impact of this valuable support, with one client reflecting,

“I have not felt suicidal for three months… I feel ready for group work, volunteering and, at some point, returning to paid employment.”
