Welcome

Welcome to the 2023 Impact Report reflecting on our activities and impact over the year. Amid the backdrop of the cost-of-living crisis, we were delighted to have supported 896 UK and overseas charities, with grants totalling £7.63million given out in the year and a further £6.85million pledged over the next three years to support ongoing service delivery and development.

We were pleased that through our external evaluation we have evidenced increases in both 'reach' and 'depth' of impact on previous years. This is creating positive and lasting change on people’s lives over the long term.

As always, we aimed to provide support that went beyond funding with added value provided by the SJP community volunteering their time and skills. In 2023 teams have delivered financial education with a football slant, provided manual labour at several of the Jamie’s Farms and helped facilitate sporting events for young people with a disability, through the Panathlon Challenge charity.

We are honoured to work with so many incredible charities and are committed to facilitating real and impactful change to those in need.

What we aim to achieve

Our theory of change below outlines our focus and how we bring together both funding and a broader holistic support offering to our grantees to help strengthen and build capacity for the charity and support long term positive change for those they support.

That broader support is facilitated through the SJP community who volunteer their time and skills, and through gift in kind support from SJP which helps to deliver an even bigger impact.

What we achieved

In 2023 we delivered both increased reach and depth of impact in our grant-making, exceeding our targets. We are committed to delivering year on year improvements  in what we do so that we can have a bigger impact in society.

Who we supported

Our grant-making continued to be focussed on four key themes, which are experiencing both increased demand for support services and increased running costs, through the cost of living challenges. We aim to be responsive to local community needs helping to support long term solutions that will ease the challenges faced.

Well Child Nurse
Children & young people

Children and young people remain a key focus of our funding. We prioritise charities that deliver meaningful programmes addressing social and economic disadvantage, as well as those supporting children and young people with disabilities.

Mental health

One in four people experience a mental health issue in the UK, and the number of children in contact with mental health services has tripled over the past seven years.

Our funding has empowered charities to respond to rising demand by expanding services and improving access to appropriate support.

Living well with cancer

Around 400,000 people receive a cancer diagnosis each year. Alongside NHS clinical care, charities play a vital role in offering practical information and emotional support to individuals and families.

We focus our funding on services that help people live well with cancer and give them and their loved ones the knowledge and confidence they need.

End of life care

While approximately 300,000 people access hospice care annually in the UK, financial challenges have forced one in five hospices to scale back their services.

We have contributed essential funding to strengthen capacity across the hospice sector, alongside direct support for local providers.

Adding Value

We aim to go further than simply providing financial support, with a holistic package including volunteering and skills-sharing by members of the SJP community. The added value of this combined offering means an even bigger impact. 2023 saw the following examples of added value.

Looking to the future

2024 represents the final year of our current strategy and we have achieved many of the aims that we set out 4 years ago, despite the unprecedented events across the world over the period (pandemic, conflict and natural disasters). We will continue to complete on the current strategy and look forward to reflecting on our achievements, understanding the opportunities for us and developing our next 3-year strategy for 2025+, with the aim of continuing to deliver impact.
